Will American Naivete Drive Damaging Climate Policy?

by

On this episode of The Federalist Radio Hour, Anatol Lieven, a senior research fellow on Russia and Europe at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, joins Culture Editor Emily Jashinsky to discuss the Biden administration’s approach to climate change and why the left’s current strategy to mitigate it is set up to fail.

“Talking about justice, it doesn’t help. How does it help to limit emissions if you go on and on and on demanding extra sacrifices from the United States? You’re not going to get them…,” Lieven said. “This is something the left cannot bring itself to admit, but that even the richest countries, particularly the richest countries in the world are going to be really endangered by mass migration if climate change gets seriously out of hand.”

Global cooperation, Lieven said, is another area that activists, politicians, and other climate-focused groups often overestimate as a strategy to mitigate climate change.

“I think global cooperation is a misnomer and I think that this was actually a mistake on the part of the Obama administration and Europe too and the United Nations, to try to get the agreement of all countries in the world because the truth of the matter is that over two-thirds of carbon gas emissions are produced by five countries,” Lieven said. “It gives [other countries] the chance to demand aid from America and the West, which frankly they’re not going to get. It drags out the negotiation process. It makes agreement very difficult.”
