Motorcycle speaker system buyers guide

by

Reading Time: 4 minutes

If you’re thinking of adding a touch of music to change the mood while driving your motorcycle, you might want to consider adding a speaker system. Before modifying and improving your motorcycle speaker system, it’s good to know the best modifications you can make for it to sound and look cool. Whether it’s a street bike or a chopper, adding an audio system is always a welcomed feature.

If you want to listen to music while riding or when parked, you need to make sure the features and installation method are correct, so you can enjoy it. Below are some of the things you should know before installing a motorcycle speaker system.

Loudness level

One of the most important features of a motorcycle speaker system is the loudness. What’s the point if you can’t hear it, right? Make sure to check the product before you buy it, read reviews, and ask for recommendations.

Your amazing new motorcycle speakers should keep the music loud in any situation even if you have loud pipes. The loudness of the speakers plays an important role when choosing because engine sounds mixed with your favorite music sets a whole different mood.

For example, if your bike is loud and the speaker system cannot keep up its power, then there’s no point in installing a sound system. Remember to choose motorcycle speakers that are loud enough to keep up even when you reach the speed of 40mph and above.

Speaker mount location

The speaker mount location is one of the first things to consider when purchasing a sound system for your motorcycle. While other types of vehicles have a specifically designed area for speakers, motorcycles don’t. An ideal location to mount your speakers would be directly onto the handlebars or highway bars, as it offers high-quality sound and it doesn’t interfere with how your bike operates.

Handlebar-mounted speakers, for instance, are usually great since they direct the sound in front of the rider which makes it clearer. Only make sure that it doesn’t get in the way of the controls and instruments when you attach it to the handlebars. Also, make sure it fits your bike’s model and design.

Connectivity

After checking the loudness and mounting location, it’s time to consider the features of the speaker system. You should consider the connectivity of your new sound system and whether it’s wired or wireless. Look for Bluetooth connectivity since it’s better to be wireless than wired, so you can easily connect your phone or MP3 player. Bluetooth is also necessary for a turn-by-turn GPS navigation system.

Motorcycle speaker systems with wireless capability provide full-range audio and don’t require much space. Whenever you need music to enjoy your ride, you can easily access it through Bluetooth. Speakers that don’t have Bluetooth capability can still be used wirelessly by using Bluetooth adapters and receivers.

Waterproof

The weather is unpredictable, and you probably don’t plan to keep your motorcycle in the garage 24/7. It is crucial to make sure that the motorcycle speaker system you’re purchasing is waterproof. It needs to continue to operate whether rain or sun, regardless of the weather conditions. When purchasing, consider one that will highly sustain prolonged exposure from tiny particles that may enter the system.

Almost all motorcycle speakers are waterproof and have good protection from outside damages such as humidity and rain. Consider checking the waterproof rating to make sure they are durable for the elements. Imagine also having RGB lightning that would shine down on the waterproof cones which will complete the color scheme perfectly and make your bike look cool.

Wattage and engine noise interference

Wattage is a basic requirement. Bear in mind that lower wattage speakers are quieter, and they have less consumption but have a significant impact on performance and volume. For better setup, make sure to check the correct mounting location of the speaker, your driving style, and the noise coming from your motorcycle’s engine. If you use your motorcycle sound system in noisy places like populated areas or highways, then buy a high power-rating speaker.

Engine noise interference is very possible with motorcycle sound systems, since the ground loops may dilute the sound produced by the stereo. Modern speaker systems usually have built-in noise filtering; however, you can also invest in a noise suppression device.

In closing

Some might consider motorcycle speakers as something impractical, but actually, it is quite necessary. Knowing what to look for when buying motorcycle speaker systems will make your choice easier, and you can start enjoying your ride much sooner. Listening to your favorite music surrounded by the sweet sound of the engine will ensure your rides are relaxed and enjoyable.
