How to stay in the work mindset when working remotely

by

Reading Time: 3 minutes

For many professionals, remote work is now a necessity as opposed to luxury because of COVID-19. When you work from home, it’s much easier to combine your business and personal lives under one roof and find a better work-life balance. However, to make sure that you stay on track with your work commitments, it’s important that you keep your work and personal lives somewhat separate during the workday in order to stay focused.

If you have never worked from home before, it can take some time to get used to this way of working. Working from home comes with many benefits, allowing you the chance to gain more time back in your schedule, spend more time with family, set your own work hours and take control of your life in a whole new way. However, to enjoy all of the advantages of working remotely, you need to ensure that you adopt the right mindset.

Continue reading to learn how you can stay focused and on-task when you are working from home.

Dress For Success

It’s not necessary to wear a three-piece suit or pencil skirt and heels when you’re working from home, but getting dressed, instead of staying in your pajamas, is important. Working from home is about keeping a business mindset and daily ritual which will help to keep you focused. Although it might be a nice idea to sit in your pajamas and be comfortable, with this approach, you will never truly feel like you are “at work”, even virtually. Instead, wear corporate workwear that is comfortable and sets the right tone for the workday ahead.

Set Boundaries

The idea of remote work may seem that you are hardly working to some, but this is a common misconception. Sometimes it can be difficult to emphasize that you have to work, even when a friend invites you for a mid-afternoon movie break or a long lunch. People are unaware, unless you tell them that you work from home and, as such, you need to set boundaries. Take charge of your schedule by telling your friends when you’re available, instead of waiting for others to tell you when they’re available. Set boundaries by not making excuses for working from home. Whether you’re in the office or not, set a time when you can step away from your desk, and when you cannot. This will help you stick to your boundaries and keep a work mindset.

Make A Home Office Your Own

In the first few months of working from home, you may not have had time to set up your home office. Although it might not have been a priority at the time of starting working from home, having your own workspace can make a world of difference to your mindset. If you are working from home on the couch while your family members go about their day around you, you will very quickly start to feel under pressure. To avoid this situation, do your best to create a workspace that nurtures your productivity and positivity.

Take In-Between Breaks

Working from home can often cause you to skip breaks altogether due to potential distractions. However, you need to remember that it’s okay to take ten minutes to relax when you need it. If you’re working at a desk, get up during your breaks and do something else rather than watching YouTube videos or browsing mindlessly through social media. Instead, spend time with family or friends who might be in the house, or go on a walk for some much-needed fresh air to recharge yourself so you’re at your best when you return to your desk.

Adopt The Right Mindset When You’re Working From Home To Ensure Success

You can easily let your work-life take over your personal life if you work from home full-time or regularly. Even in the best of circumstances, working from home can be challenging but with these simple strategies, you can stay motivated and on task with your mindset on work. Trying to focus on work and avoiding distractions can be difficult, but with the right approach, you can be sure your experience is positive.
